An earthquake centred in the capital of Haiti ocurred at 6:00. It was less than 150 km from us. It was a major earthquake, measuring around 7 on the Richter scale. We were beginning an evening intensive class when it occurred. We walked out into the street and it seemed like it lasted four or five minutes and everything was moving under our feet. Thank God on this side of the island we are all ok and no major damage or even injuries.
Reports are comining out of Haiti of many dead and that many structures have collapsed. More than 2 million Haitians live in the Dominican Republic, some are members of our missions. There are many Lutheran brothers and sisters in Haiti that we are praying for as well. We pray this night for mercy and that anguished hearts would find solace in our dear Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
We ask for your prayers as we together pray to our Triune God for His tender care and protection.
