The following is a letter from Larry Ryan, Director of Missions, regarding Project Genesis:
“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14
The educational environment at our Concordia Lutheran School has shown tremendous improvement. Fans and appropriate lighting have been installed in all instructional areas. These installations meet or exceed national requirements. Repairs to the generator and the installation of an inverter and back up batteries will allow this school to be a 24 hour functional facility. thus, evening classes will be held at a high school level as well as vocational programs such as computer literacy and mechanics. A school steering committee composed of the principal, pastors, parents and our new vicar meet monthly to evaluate the progress and plan for future initiatives. The dream of our Mission Board has always been to make this site a community center. At long last this dream is now becoming a reality. In short, the educational, physical and spiritual development of our youngsters at this school and the community as the whole has improved dramatically. A separate meeting for all members of the community is held monthly followed by an additional church service. Devotions are conducted at all meetings. One of the initiatives which came out of these meetings regarded the establishment of a school library. This will be a first for that community. If you have access to any books written in Spanish for grades K-8 for that library, please let me know.
Community involvement is at an all time high. Pastor Krey recently asked for volunteers to help level the playground and over 50 volunteers responded!
The Genesis School has adopted many of the programs initiated by the Concordia Lutheran School and we are prayerfully hoping to see much more progress in other areas as well.
Christmas gifts are needed for our children in the DR. Our trip is planned for December 12-16th. Please call if you are interested in joining us. You may bring a toy and place it in the box located in the Narthex. Please write the child’s name on the package with black marker. Due to customs regulations, DO NOT WRAP GIFTS. Cash donations will also be appreciated. ALL GIFTS MUST BE SMALLER than a shoebox. Gifts must be in by November 14th for shipping before Thanksgiving, so please get them in early. For many of these youngsters, this is the only gift they will receive this year.
Many more exciting things are occurring. I will be reporting two major positive events to our church council on November 1, 2010. These will be included in the November newsletter. Please continue to keep Pastor Krey, Pastor Reis and Danelle Putnam and their families in yoru prayers. I want you to know that your prayers have contributed greatly to the Glory of God in this foreign land.
