On the morning of December 15th, the children of Concordia Lutheran School in Palmar Arriba had their final Christmas pageant practice. It was something of a disaster – kids pushing one another, memorized Bible verses were suddenly forgotten, the songs that they had been practicing since the middle of October just weren’t flowing properly, our microphone and speakers weren’t working. Grimly we pushed ahead, breathing a sigh of relief when it was over, but tense thinking about the evening’s event quickly drawing nigh. The first parents came to a full hour before the divine service. By 7:30 pm, our sanctuary was overflowing with parents and members spilling out the back door and down the staircase. there were youth peering in from the side windows of the sanctuary. We began with the Invocation, Confession and Absolution, the Kyrie, the Gloria Patri, Psalm, and then the children began filing into the congregation’s singing of “O come, All Ye Faithful.” How the children sang and spoke from memory the Christmas story and the prophecies of the Old testament. They sang “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night” amongst others. Four short law-gospel meditations were given, causing all to think on this baby born in a manger who is Christ the Lord! We praise God that out of the “mouth of babes He has ordained praise!” Psalm 8.
