Children studying the catechism.

By Pastor Ted Krey

At this time, our missions are being blessed through the preaching fo the Word. Some 40 people in 5 different classes are studying the catechism in our missions. We are thankful to the Lord of the Harvest for sinners being called to repentance and forgiveness in the Good News of our dear Lord Jesus Christ. Give thanks with us and pray that shese seeds which have been sown would take deep root and not have the cares of the world take them away.

Seminarian Idjon Fritz, being installed as school Chaplain for Escuela Luterana la Concordia

By Pastor Ted Krey

Our school opening was celebrated Sunday evening, September 9th, in a special service in which the children of the school sang hymns and recited Bible verses. In this service Idjon Fritz, who has studies theology for four years, was installed as chaplain of our school. Idjon has taught music, French and sports for two years. He has continued to grow in his knowledge of Scriptures and we are thrilled to have him work with the pastors and vicar in pointing our parents, teachers, and students to Christ in all things. Thus far, our school has grown from 115 children last year to 138 students this year, along with one new teacher.

Meet Seminarian Ivon

By Pastor Ted Krey

We first met Ivon and Marta through our “Amigos de Jesus” outreach in Licey four years ago. “Amigos de Jesus” is a group for children with disabilities and their families, which meets once a month. Ivon and Marta quickly became volunteers teaching Bible studies, doing crafts, and gathering the children with disabilities to meet at the local fire station in Licey where they hold their meetings.

In the winter of 2011, Ivon and Marta were confirmed together, at the first worship service in Licey. They have two young daughters, Ambar and Anel. Marta works as a school psychiatrist, and is also an excellent seamstress. Ivon works in a tobacco factory and is also working at getting is architectural degree from university. As a couple, they are studying a year-long course with Pastor Walter Ries Jr. on Basic Christian Doctrine by Kohler. Ivon is also in his second year of pastoral studies through our on-line theological program with Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Currently, the mission in Licey meets in a member’s home. Ivon’s mother and father attend regularly as well. Lord-willing, we will soon be able to find a property for future building of a church in Licey, where Ivon may one day serve as the pastor! Please keep Ivon and Marta in your prayers as they continue to grow in their witness of Christ and live vocationally to sanctify His Name!

End of the School Year

Francis, who attended the Santiago Deaf School, is learning more and more signs every day. we are trying to keep up with him so we learn to communicate with him in signs as well! Estefani, who was included into first grade this past year at Concordia Lutheran School, has learned how to read and write. Junior has made progress in his fine-motor skills in writing, and is improving his cognitive processes. Moises was included into the pre-school class in January for 3 hours a day and had a successful socialization semester.

The teachers, school children, parents, and community members have fully supported the inclusion of the children into the school. We know that in the future the children of Concordia Lutheran School will help make a more inclusive society and help better the lives of people with developmental disabilities. We thank the Lord for using school inclusion to show us how we are all important members of the Body of Christ.

Intensive Reformation History Course

By Pastor Walter Ries, Jr.

We were privileged to have Pastor Milton Hofstetter from Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Buenos Aires, Argentina, come and give a course on Reformation history to our seminarians during the last weekend of February. This is one of two courses that our men receive in person from the seminary professors in Argentina. Lively discussion was had by all and highlights of the course were the conversations on the theology of the cross and how our Lord speaks clearly and plainly to us even today through His Word. We give thanks to our Lord for the faithful teachings received from our sister church in Argentina and pray that our Lord would give our professors strength and love to continue to teach us here.

On Friday, March 2nd, our Concordia School children gathered for their Lenten service in which they recited Bible verses and hymns from memory to over 300 people. they sang ‘Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted’, ‘Christ the Life of all the Living’ and two liturgical songs, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ and ‘Lamb of God’. Six short meditations of Law and Gospel interspersed the service allowing the assembled to meditate on the life of Christ flawlessly lived in love towards us and faithfulness to our Heavenly Father. The entire school body concluded the service by reciting from memory Isaiah 53:1-7, of the life of our Lord poured out in love on all the cross on behalf of all humanity.

Mission Partners Meet

By Pastor Ted Krey

During the first weekend in March, we were blessed to have our mission partners from South Wisconsin District, Bethesda, Lutheran World Relief and Human Care, and LCMS Mission join us for our bi-annual two-day meeting.

One of the highlights was the approval to use remaining funds from our Concordia Publishing House VBS offerings for the purchase of a property in Licey and the building of a church! We are thrilled that our mission in Licey will have a place of mercy to baptize, teach, preach and tell others of their sin, the need for repentance, and forgiveness found in Jesus! Some items which were approved to be explored are the founding of a deaconess school, a medical clinic, and the future plans of establishing a rehabilitation center in Santiago to serve people with disabilities.
